one thing nobody wants to do is network-- yet its the life and blood of your music business
without a network (most importantly a strong one), succeeding in this industry is like trying to hike mount everest barefoot...
with no clothes on.
it's cold, it's painful, and it will suck the life out of you before you reach anywhere near the top.
most people don't network because one of two reasons:
1. its boring (i get it, i'll tell u how to make it easier)
2. they aren’t confident enough to reach out boldly (whether it’s weak social skills, not knowing who to message, or straight up not believing they’re “big enough” to be in the same room as the people they admire)
or both! either way, let's fix that. because your success depends on it.
so let’s break down how to actually network the right way — without feeling corny, desperate, or fake.
the truth is, networking isn’t always about “reaching up” to someone bigger. a lot of my my biggest connections, plays, and best relationships came from reaching across to people moving at the same pace as me-- even when i was a nobody w zero placements.
most of your early wins will come from peers — not idols.
that means:
-
connect with other hungry producers and artists in your lane
-
build genuine value exchanges (not “yo bro check my beats”)
-
and stay consistent so people associate your name with quality + momentum
think about it, there's always new people on the come up. right now there's some 4 year old that's the future of this music industry and we (and most importantly, they) don't even know it yet. nobody truly knows who will be up next.
so connect with like-minded people at your level. they'll be the easiest to bond and grow with, and will open up new doors that are also accessible to you.
and the best way to build your relationships up feels nothing like networking. "genuine" is a key word here. building genuine relationships is key. that means you get to have a bit more fun w networking in a way that doesnt feel like networking-- just chopping it in discord, sending memes in groupchats, etc. these all count towards solidifying your relationships and keep you in people's minds.
when you show up in people’s world repeatedly by helping, sharing, and collabing, is when the real doors open. don't always try to shoot for the biggest connections because you're probably already connected with more than enough people to move your career forward. you just need to maximize your network and build relationships that are real and that matter.
